What is a Zalo Mini App? When should a business build one instead of a website?

A Zalo Mini App runs inside Zalo, so customers install nothing. This post explains what it is, how it compares with a website and a mobile app, and when it is the right choice.

Your customers almost certainly use Zalo every day: chatting with family, receiving updates from shops, joining resident or parent groups. A Zalo Mini App builds on that habit. Instead of asking customers to download an app or open a browser, you put your service right inside Zalo.

This post explains what a Zalo Mini App is, how it differs from a website and a mobile app, and most importantly when your business should build one, and when it should not.

What is a Zalo Mini App?

A Zalo Mini App is a small application that runs directly inside the Zalo app. Customers open it and use it straight away: no App Store or Google Play, no installation, no extra storage.

Inside, a Mini App can do almost everything a regular shopping or booking app does: browse products, place orders, book appointments, collect loyalty points, check order history. The difference is that it all happens inside Zalo, where customers are already signed in.

How do customers open a Zalo Mini App?

  • Scanning a QR code at the counter, on a table, on packaging or on a flyer.
  • A shared link in a message, a group chat or a post.
  • The menu of your Zalo Official Account (OA): customers chatting with your OA tap it to open the Mini App.
  • Searching inside Zalo for the Mini App's name.

The strength is that customers never leave Zalo. From a conversation to a completed order is only a few taps.

Zalo Mini App vs website vs mobile app

1. How easy is it to get started?

  • Zalo Mini App: opens inside Zalo, nothing to install.
  • Website: opens in a browser, nothing to install, but customers must remember the address or search for it.
  • Mobile app: must be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play, the step where most customers drop off.

2. Sign-in and customer details

  • Zalo Mini App: customers are already signed in to Zalo. With their consent, the Mini App can read their name, avatar and phone number, with no new account and no OTP.
  • Website and app: you usually have to build sign-up, sign-in, password reset and phone verification yourself.

3. Reaching customers after a purchase

  • Zalo Mini App: combined with a Zalo OA, you can send care messages, order confirmations and appointment reminders inside Zalo, a channel customers actually read.
  • Website: mostly email or SMS, with lower read rates.
  • Mobile app: push notifications, but only if the customer installed the app and allowed notifications.

4. How do new customers find you?

  • A website clearly wins here: it is found on Google and brings in new customers from search.
  • Zalo Mini Apps and mobile apps do not appear on Google. Customers usually arrive through QR codes, shared links, your OA or ads.

5. Platform dependency

  • A Zalo Mini App follows Zalo's rules: it must pass Zalo's review before release, and its features are limited to what Zalo allows.
  • A website is an asset you fully control.
  • A mobile app follows Apple's and Google's policies, and every update waits for review.

6. Time and cost

For the same feature set, a Mini App is usually faster and cheaper to build than a mobile app, because one version runs on both iPhone and Android and there are no two app stores to publish to. Compared with a website the cost is similar, depending on how complex the features are.

Which businesses suit a Zalo Mini App?

  • F&B (cafés, restaurants, bubble tea): scan a QR code at the table to order, collect points, receive offers.
  • Spas, salons, clinics, gyms: appointment booking and reminders via Zalo.
  • Retail with regular customers: membership cards, loyalty points, repeat orders.
  • Communities, associations, residential areas, schools: announcements, events, registrations and fees, where every member already uses Zalo.
  • Local services: booking repairs, deliveries, cleaning.

What they share: customers come back often, and communication with them already happens on Zalo.

When should you not build a Zalo Mini App yet?

  • You need new customers from Google. Build a website first and add a Mini App later.
  • Your customers are abroad or rarely use Zalo.
  • Your product needs deep phone features such as continuous background work, heavy processing or special hardware. A mobile app fits better.
  • You have no plan to bring customers into the Mini App (QR codes at the point of sale, your OA, customer groups). A great Mini App that nobody opens produces nothing.

Steps to build a Zalo Mini App

  1. Pick one main goal: selling, booking, loyalty or membership management. Start with one clear goal instead of cramming everything into version one.
  2. Set up a Zalo Official Account for the business, to attach the Mini App and message customers.
  3. Design the interface for phone screens, following how customers already use Zalo.
  4. Build and test on real devices, both iPhone and Android, since many features only behave correctly inside Zalo.
  5. Submit for Zalo review. Zalo checks the content, interface and data permissions before release.
  6. Launch and bring customers in: place QR codes at the point of sale, add it to the OA menu, share it in customer groups.

Case study: G-Connect, a community management Zalo Mini App

G-Connect is a community management Zalo Mini App that CloudGO introduced at CX DAY 2025 (23 December 2025), built for associations, professional communities and expert networks in Vietnam.

The reason for choosing a Mini App was practical: association members already talk to each other on Zalo. Putting the management platform inside Zalo lets members join without installing another app or remembering another account.

Still deciding whether to build a Zalo Mini App?

Answer three questions: do customers come back regularly, do you mostly talk to them on Zalo, and do you have touchpoints to bring them into the Mini App (counter, tables, OA, group chats)? If all three are "yes", a Zalo Mini App is well worth the investment.
